Reigning champion Scott McLaughlin put the new Ford Mustang supercar to top in Free Practice 2, after a late effort dethroned Jamie Whincup from top.

The Australian set a 1:20.390 to beat the two Holden Commodores after the chequered flags were waved.

The 25-year old was on top of the times with less than 5 minutes remaining in the session, getting pipped by van Gisbergen and Whincup soon afterwards before posting the fastest time across the chequered flags.

In second and third were the two Triple-Eight Engineering cars, with Jamie Whincup ahead of Shane van Gisbergen by less than two-tenths of a second.

Scott Pye secured fourth place for Walkinshaw Andretti United by a 1:20.746, while the sister DJR Penske finished fifth with Fabian Coulthard.

Mark Winterbottom finished 6th despite a strong performance in early stages of the session and moving up to third, before settling to current pace after DJR Penske and Walkinshaw Andretti United cars set the pace.

Lee Holdsworth put the first of the Tickford Racing cars in 7th. Completing the top 10 were Todd Hazelwood of Matt Stone Racing, Tim Slade of Brad Jones Racing and Cameron Waters of Tickord Racing.

Down the order, David Reynolds finished 15th while his teammate and Practice 1 pacesetter Anton De Pasquale finished 23rd for TEKNO Autosports. Simona De Silvestro also had a good performance, being the fastest Kelly Racing driver, driving the Nissan Altima.

After James Courtney touched the wall at Turn 8, Tim Slade caused red flags after running into gravel at Turn 11.
