Nelson Piquet Jr. leaves Jaguar Formula E Team

Shahmir Khan

Piquet Jr. joined Jaguar in 2017-18 with a strong start but crashed in 3 out of 6 races this season.

Nelson Piquet Jr. left the Panasonic Jaguar Formula E team, as Alex Lynn has been approached by the team for remainder of 2018-19 Formula E season.

Piquet joined the team last season, with a strong start that year. The race last weekend at Sanya was his last race with Jaguar where he retired with damage for the third consecutive time since Mexico. He was the first Formula E champion in 2014-15 season, winning the title with China Racing, now known as NIO Formula E team.

The Brazilian scored only 7 points in last 13 races.

“Following discussions after Sanya, Nelson and ourselves have reflected on the position of the team,” said team principal James Barclay.

“Regrettably, it has been agreed that he will leave Panasonic Jaguar Racing and take up other opportunities he has been offered.

“We made a big step forward when Nelson joined us in Season Four, and he achieved some strong results for the team, but recent results have not met his or the team’s expectations.

“We want to take this opportunity to thank Nelson for all the hard work he has put in since joining us ahead of Season Four; he has contributed a significant amount into the development of the car and we wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Lynn to replace Piquet from Rome

Alex Lynn has been confirmed as Piquet's replacement now, who was expected to test the car at Mexico but missed the opportunity due to clashing commitments with Aston Martin in WEC, will drive alongside Mitch Evans at Rome EPRIX.

Alex Lynn will replace Piquet for remainder of the season, starting from Rome EPRIX

Lynn was replaced by Robin Frijns for current season, resulting him in losing his seat following a major team restructure.

"I am really excited to get behind the wheel of the Jaguar I-Type 3 in Rome,” Lynn said.

“Joining Panasonic Jaguar Racing is a great opportunity for me. I am focused on working with Mitch, the engineers and technicians to put in a strong performance from now until the end of the season.”

"Our objective this season is to be competing for podiums, we have agreed that Alex will join the team from the next event in Rome,” added Jaguar team director James Barclay.

“With half the season remaining we will be pushing very hard for strong results. I would like to welcome Alex to the Panasonic Jaguar Racing team and look forward to working with him.”
