
Spanish broadcaster, Movistar has secured exclusive rights for IndyCar races to be aired on Deportes channel. Movistar is owned and operated by the Spanish telecommunications giant, Telefonica.
While DAZN was anticipated to be the stronger bidder of the two, it was Movistar+, the Spanish pay-TV platform, that ultimately won the rights to air all 17 races of the 2019 IndyCar season in Spain.
The deal also includes broadcasting of the spectacle of racing, the Indianapolis 500 on the Vamos channel. It will certainly fetch massive amounts of Spanish audience, that will tune in to watch Fernando Alonso race at the IMS.
According to Sportcal, Movistar made an eleventh hour bid to keep the rights of IndyCar. Movistar had earlier lost a bid to DAZN to broadcast MotoGP in Spain.
The deal appears very much similar to that of Sky Sports', which will be broadcasting both Formula 1 as well as IndyCar in the UK and Ireland. Movistar itself is entitled to air all the F1 races in Spain until 2020.
Spanish F1 star and former double world champion, Fernando Alonso will return to the Brickyard to try his luck for the 2nd time, and attempt to win the coveted Indy 500.
Fernando has already won both the Monaco Grand Prix as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. By winning the Indianapolis 500, the Spaniard will become only the 2nd driver in motorsport history to have claimed the Triple Crown of Motorsport.
