Maverick Vinales gets pole position for Yamaha

Maverick Vinales got pole position for Yamaha at the season opening race in Qatar while Rossi was out in Q1.


Vinales beat Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso to top with 0.198s separating the two riders. Marc Marquez was third, just one thousandths of a second behind Dovizioso.


Vinales was the initial pacesetter of the session, setting 1:53.848s ahead of Nakagami and Quartararo.


Vinales continued to set personal bests and at the end, went quickest with 1:53.546s.


Jack Miller had a crash at Turn 2, moments after taking second place in the session. The Aussie finished fourth overall.


Rookie Fabian Quartararo set 5th fastest lap on his debut, with 1:53.946 around the car, ahead of Cal Crutchlow.


Danilo Petrucci, Franco Morbidelli, Takaki Nakagami, Alex Rins, Joan Mir and Alsix Espargaro completed the first 6 rows of the grid.


Jorge Lorenzo meanwhile, will start from 15th as the Honda rider had a crash at Turn 2 with less than 5 minutes on the clock.



Valentino Rossi failed to make it to Q2 as the Yamaha driver didn't set any quickest times. He will start from 14th tomorrow.
