Indonesia is all set to become host to a MotoGP race in the streets of the Lombok Island, beginning from 2021.
The race is being planned to be held on a street course that will span up to a distance of 4.3 kilometers, and will contain 18 corners.
Given the highly profitable SouthEast Asian market, MotoGP expanded into Thailand in 2018 and is now going to enter Indonesia as well. A Malaysian race is already being hosted at the Sepang International Circuit for years now.
"(The site) will be designated as a sports tourism destination and the plan is to build a MotoGP circuit there by 2021," said the Tourism Ministry Spokesman, Guntur Sakti.
The island of Lombok saw mass scale devastation last year when a series of deadly earthquakes jolted the island, resulting in more than 500 deaths.
The race is supposed to help the Lombok Island economy recover from the devastation, Indonesia's tourism development agency explained. The Lombok island is nearby the highly famous tourist spot destination of Indonesia, Bali island.
An agreement was reached between MotoGP and the tourism development agency to run the race for 3 years, from 2021 to up until 2023, while the French company, Vinci Construction is expected to lead the entire project.
