It is being reported that Ferrari is evaluating a potential Hypercar entry for the 2020-2021 World Endurance Championship season. Ferrari is close to finalizing the deal and may announce soon, Stephen Kilbey and Graham Goodwin of the Racer.com has learned.

As per the claim, multiple sources close to the Italian automobile giant confirmed it to the RACER that Ferrari was indeed finalizing the plans for an entry with a hypercar for the 2020-2021 WEC season. The new regulations are supposed to bring down the operational costs of participating in WEC and Ferrari has been among those manufacturers who have all been playing an active role in shaping these future regulations.

It is worth noting that Ferrari currently competes in partnership with AF Corse in the GTE-Pro category of the WEC. Although, it is understood that AF Corse had no involvement or whatsoever in evaluating the hypercar entry of Ferrari, as it happens to be a decision completely taken by the company itself.

Worth mentioning the fact that the previous regulations change saw a dramatic hike in operational costs for LMP1 class competing in the World Endurance Championship beginning from 2014. Major high profile names including Porsche, Audi and Toyota all competed together with the Japanese giant remaining the sole manufacturer in the said category from 2018 onward. Both Porsche and Audi refocused their efforts at the new Formula E series which is gaining popularity and attracting big sponsors and names with each passing season.

Besides Ferrari, other automobile giants such as traditional rival McLaren as well as Aston Martin and Glickenhaus are also expected to be racing in the hypercar class of the 2020 WEC field. ByKolles recently confirmed that they as well are working on a potential hypercar entry. Toyota, who won their first Le Mans 24 Hours in 2018, have also committed to the regulations for the first year of implementation. There is at least one more high profile company expected to join the likes of McLaren and Ferrari. Several automobile companies have been actively participating in forming the new rules and regulations for 2020-2021 WEC season as they were finalized at the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Russia two months ago.
