Chip Ganassi's rookie Felix Rosenqvist led the opening session of Grand Prix of Alabama, pipping Sebastien Bourdais by just 0.0454s, while the session had multiple red flags.

The track was pretty damp as the session begin, with several rookies taking to track on primary red tyres to set the quickest lap in the session of 1:09.230.

Sebastien Bourdais was the closest competitor to Rosenqvist in Dayle Coyne Racing, just four one-hundredths of a second separating them while James Hinchliffe was only a further five one-hundredths behind in the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports car.

Reigning IndyCar Champion Scott Dixon finished the session being the fourth quickest, 0.2 seconds behind his teammate ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay with youngest and most recent winner Colton Herta in 6th place for Harding Steinbrenner Racing.

Carlin's Patricio O'Ward was the quickest of the Chevrolet powered cars, setting a 1:09.501s just before the chequered flags.

Takuma Sato was eighth quickest after running very wide off the road, just first of the many incidents to take place during the session.

James Hinchliffe also spun his car on the entrance to pitlane, but continued shortly after.

The first red flag meanwhile, was caused by Mathew Leist in A.J Foyt Enterprises car, who spun at exit of Turn 5, colliding with the kerb on outside and spinning into barriers at Turn 6, taking 8 minutes away with his teammate Tony Kanaan also spinning at Turn 16 and then stalling the car while rolling down the hill, bringing out another red flag.

The third and final red flag was caused by Spencer Pigot who spun at final tirn at ended into gravel trap.

Completing the Top 10 were Andretti duo of Alexander Rossi and Simon Pagenaud, both drivers not getting enough time to set a good lap during the multiple flagged periods.

Marco Andretti was the other Andretti driver, out of Top 10 and leading Will Power and Tony Kanaan.
