Fabian Coulthard topped the final practice session of the day in Shell V-Power DJR Penske car

Fabian Coulthard beat his teammate Scott McLaughlin to top by just six-hundredths of a second in Free Practice 3 for Adelaide 500.

Coulthard set a 1:20.114s in his Ford Mustang GT, edging McLaughlin's time of 1:20.179.

"It’s all about knowing what you’ve got," Coulthard said.

"I just needed to get a bit of confidence back, that’s definitely the way to do it.

"The car’s been good all weekend, we’ve been there or thereabouts, I just need to do it when it counts."

Jamie Whincup was fastest of the Holden drivers in third position, setting a 1:20.192, ahead of Nick Percat and Chaz Mostert, with just five one-thousandths of a second separating the two.

"The car rolled out well. It’s what we finished with, we just didn’t put a new tyre on it in the practice this morning," Percat said.

"We made a few little tweaks to the car for that session, ran obviously a decent tyre, but were still even a step behind Sladey in terms of tyre quality, so we were surprised to be floating around that top six.

"Then obviously the first to go and probably show where the track was at and it was good. Obviously we’re both learning together, he obviously tuned his up at the end and was quick.

"We made another little change for that last set of tyre and it nearly hung on.

"I think we were quite quick all the way to Turn 11 and I made a little mistake, I got a bit greedy coming into the parklands, but better to find out now than later."

Tim Slade was sixth ahead of Will Davison, Cameron Waters, Anton De Pasquale and and Scott Pye.

Shane van Gisbergen was in 12th place for Triple-Eight Engibeer ahead of David Reynolds while Mark Winterbottom was in last place.

The 4 Nissan cars of Kelly Racing came in an order from 17th to 20th, with team owner Rick Kelly the quickest ahead of Simona De Silvestro.

Next up is Qualifying session 1, that will set the grid for Race 1 tomorrow after a Top 10 shootout.
