Antonio Felix da Costa got his maiden pole position in a tough qualifying session for the opening round of FIA Formula E Championship in Ad Diriyah on Saturday.

The BMW driver set a fastest lap of 1:17.728 in the first of two qualifying sessions and starts this afternoon’s race from pole for the very first time. This proves BMW to be a strong contender for Championship but we have yet to see.

Meanwhile, The Argentine, Jose Maria Lopez will start on front row alongside the Portuguese driver this afternoon though he qualified third, as Tom Dillmann looks set to get a penalty and his second place on the grid, taken.

Dillmann set plenty of flying laps early in the first qualifying session, causing confusion for everyone.

Sebastien Buemi was fourth quickest but moved up to third, ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne and Sam Bird.

The second qualifying session had two big accidents, with red flags stopping the clock with less 3 minutes to go after Maxmilian Gunther stopped on track due to power loss it seemed.

Felix Rosenqvist hit the barriers right at the end of the session, causing Marshalls to wave red flags in confusion and clear the track despite no red flag period was officially brought out by the Stewards.

Da Costa and BMW also got the first points of the Generation 2 era, with three points being awarded for pole position.

The Ad Diriyah ePrix gets underway at 5:05 pm Pakistan time.
