Fabian Coulthard did the quickest one-lap performance to put his car on pole position for Race 1 in Adelaide.
The Dick Johnson Racing driver set a 1:19.891, being the only driver in the session to dip under 1:19 and leaving three-tenths to his closest rival.
“It’s been awesome. I can’t thank my guys enough, Shell V-Power Racing, everyone at Ford Performance in America,” he said.
“It’s been a real effort to get these Mustangs on the grid and to get the first pole in a Mustang is pretty special. I can’t thank everyone enough.
“I’ve been confident but this is awesome for my confidence, it’s good to know that we’re on the way back.
“It’s a long way to go until November at Newcastle but we’ll give it a good go.”
Jamie Whincup slotted alongside Fabian Coulthard in 2nd place, setting a 1:20.217 in Triple-Eight ZB Commodore with some problems in Turn 4 and 7 throughout the lap but a quick final sector locked a place on front row for him.
“Three tenths is a long way in our game so big congrats to Fabian and the Shell crew, they did a good job, had two very fast cars,” said the 7-time V8 Supercars winner.
“Front row of the grid, we couldn’t be happier with that from where we come from at the test day.”
The second row was completed by the two Mustangs, with Scott McLaughlin ahead of the Tickford Racing's Mustang of Cam Waters.
Van Gisbergen was fifth fastest after bumping the wall in first and second sectors before setting a great time in final sector to push David Reynolds to 6th.
Reynolds set 1:20.313 which promoted him from his 9th place in qualifying to 6th in shootout.
“My rear roll bar keeps like going softer halfway around the lap so I’m stressing out about it,” he said.
“All in all, this is so hot… I can’t help myself, I’m a stress head.”
Will Davison finished 7th, despite a great lap put him into 6th, before Reynolds set a quickest lap to get ahead of Davison.
Completing the Top 10 were Nick Percat, James Courtney and Rick Kelly, with Percat and Kelly dropping from their 4th and 8th positions in qualifying to 8th and 10th in shootout, respectively.
