Renault signs Pat Fry for 2020 season

Writer: Farhan KhurramFarhan Khurram

Former McLaren and Ferrari engineer, Pat Fry is all set to join Renault for the forthcoming F1 season.

Having worked for the likes of McLaren and Ferrari, Pat Fry has more than 2 decades of experience in Formula 1.

Fry was hired by McLaren during the 2018 season, in order to help the team develop a better car for 2019. He oversaw the development of this year's MCL34 in the capacity of Engineering Director.

However, his departure from the Woking based team was announced in July, as former Toro Rosso engineer, James Key joined McLaren. Fry was on a gardening leave since then.

For now, it is uncertain as to what role will be assigned to the highly experienced Formula 1 engineer, though, it is understood that Fry will be serving at Renault in a senior position, once his contractual agreement with McLaren comes to an end.

The Briton, who is 55 years of age, began his extensive career in Formula 1 with Benetton on the onset of the 1992 season and later got promoted as a Race Engineer.

He then further progressed and joined McLaren under the leadership of the now retired Ron Dennis. Fry was then poached away by rivals Ferrari in 2010, a team that he left in 2014 to pursue a brief spell with an ailing Manor.

Marcin Budkowski, who currently serves in the capacity of Executive Director at Renault, commented that, “I am delighted to be able to work with Pat again,”

“His arrival is yet another step as we build and improve our team structure.

"Pat’s experience, talent and determination will be additional assets as we continue our progress.”

It's worth mentioning that Fry isn't the only man that the French outfit has managed to lure in the past few days, given the recent announcement of former Lotus engineer, Dirk de Beer's return to the team as Head of Aerodynamics.

It was Pat Fry, who helped McLaren make massive improvements with their current MCL34, a car that currently happens to be the 4th fastest on the grid. McLaren's first season with Renault had proved to be disastrous, as the MCL33 was marred with flaws and failures over the course of the season.

The car was slow and imperfect to such a degree that the wind tunnel data never matched the MCL33's on track performance during testing as well as Grand Prix runs.
