Haas will retain the river line-up of Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean in 2019

Former McLaren and current Haas driver Kevin Magnussen said that his current teammate is faster than the 2009 World Champion Jenson Button.

The Danish driver is happy with his performance, despite being outqualified by his teammate several times during the season but had quick race pace and consistency.

Magnussen is satisfied with the team too, that had an often tough session as he explains: "We are still a young team on a steep learning curve."

"Perhaps we had a better car than we really expected. We were fighting in a higher weight class than the one we belonged to. But it's a luxury problem that shows how much talent and potential the team has," he said in an interview with BT Newspaper.

Magnussen was the highlight driver of the year, but his teammate Grosjean eventually made recovery drives, getting 4th position in Austria as Magnussen explains:

"Romain came back after a difficult period and it might have seemed like I took a step backwards. But that was not the case. He had just returned to his highest level."

"It is clear that with the update, Romain got a car that suited him very well. Overall it was better, but unlike Romain I could drive the old one too."

"In fact I have a hard time understanding that it made such a big difference to Romain."

Magnussen thinks Grosjean is his fastest teammate, ahead of Jenson Button, despite the Frenchman's mistakes in Baku and Spain.

Romain Grosjean crashes into wall at 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix during safety car period, an incident he blamed on Marcus Ericsson

"If you look at the whole package - human, chemistry, lap times and so on - Jenson is the best teammate I've had. But there is no doubt that Romain is faster than Jenson.*

"On one lap, Romain is exceptionally fast when it all goes well for him," he said.

The Dane is unarguably correct, as Grosjean won the overall qualifying battle from Magnussen.

"It would have meant more to me if I had won it," Magnussen laughed. "Perhaps it means something if the big teams are looking at you, but I'm not advertising myself like that."
