In the more conventional way of giving points to the drivers accordingly through the top 10 leaderboard, the FIA, specifically the Strategy and F1 Commision group, has approved of giving an additional one point for setting the fastest lap on race day.

Although not entirely significant, this will in some form help and ramp the battle between drivers for championship gains even if it is by one point. Looking at the 2007 and 2008 seasons the difference between the first and the second driver in the championship standing was by one point. In that regard this could lead to close championship battle starting in 2019.

However it is not something that every driver can take advantage of, the point can only be rewarded if the driver finishes in the top 10 that is viable for the fastest lap reward.

The concept isn't new either, as it is seen in Formula E, to give more versatility, and in Formula 1 back in the 50s. Till then it hadn't had enough relevancy to the sport but it has now fully returned.
