McLaren has undergone rough time in recent years since the team went through a downfall beginning of 2013 season. And it didn't end there when they partnered with Honda, the team was dwarfed in the competition when their cars became festive with retirements in every race onward from 2015.

But it wasn't to last though, as the team finally broke up with Honda and partnered with Renault in hopes for regaining some competition back in the sport. Although the effect wasn't immediate as the team expected, Alonso finishing P5 in the opening race of 2018 season never saw a higher grid position since then.

The CEO of McLaren Racing, Zak Brown

It is until now that Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren Racing, has introduced his 5 year recovery plan to his shareholders in hopes to bring the team back to the front grid.

“I have just presented a five-year plan and within that plan, we think we have a journey to get back to winning races, and then once you’re winning races, you’re competing for the championship,” Brown said.

Zak Brown also mentioned about the sport pivoting to the teams who have taken advantages of the regulation and must change so that other back-marker teams like

Sauber and Williams can have a chance to fight as well. Considering how rare the sport gets to see other teams getting podiums, let alone race wins, is a another issue regarding the modern F1.

“I think it’s critical that Liberty makes changes to the sport … because right now, the way the sport is going, it’s difficult for more than two or three teams to compete for the championship, so I think there are things that are out of our control, but hopefully we can influence that need to change for multiple teams to be able to win races and compete for the championship.

“We have laid out a journey and investment, a road to recovery that sees us getting back to the front of the grid in that timeline.”

McLaren Racing's shareholders have been convinced about the recovery plan and they are willing to invest into the team to the right direction. It is also stated that there is no specific deadline for the team to be at but rather show the visible improvements that progress is being made.

Knowing that McLaren's last championship was won by Lewis 11 years ago and their last constructor's title back in '98, it is now or never for a once legendary team to fight back for recovery and for future championships.
